Classic American sportswear has often been synonymous with the Michael Kors range, but in recent years the American designer has been known to branch out to incorporate a whole range of accessories into his creations. Working as a designer for the last 30 years, Kors has built up a huge celebrity following including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Heidi Klum and American First Lady Michelle Obama.
Kors has taken a step away from the designing aspect of the fashion industry in the last few years and has moved more towards helping new fashion designers find their break in the fashion industry. To help young fashion designers realise their dream, he has joined the panel of the popular show Project Runway to guide and mentor potential designers on their path into the industry.
Since the start of the American version of Project Runway, Kors has been a judge and the show is now going into its eighth season. The show format is very simple; each week contestants must design a range of clothes and designs to conform with the challenge they are given, competing against each other to produce the best design. The designs are judged each week taking into account how well the contestants has taken on the ideas and inspirations they have been given as well as how well they have performed in the given time. Each week one or more contestants head home until one winner is left.
The show is designed to really challenge the competitors sense of style and fashion. Tasks can include making clothes from rather strange and abnormal materials including paper and plastic, edible items and items purchased from various different stores. Designers are given a very limited amount of time in which to complete their designs this can range from a few days down to just a few hours in certain situations, this is designed to test the competitiors ability to think and work quickly to a tight deadline.
The models also compete against each other for a prize which usually includes a spread in Elle magazine. Models are chosen each week by the designers to model their clothes and the winning model is the one that has been chosen by the winning designer.
